While enthusiasts and historians will debate just when the original muscle car era began, just about everyone is in agreement about when the last car of the era was built. It was the 1974 Super Duty 455-powered Firebird Formulas and Trans Ams, and they closed out the show with arguably one of the fastest cars ever, even hampered by low compression and a mild camshaft. The 455 Super Duty was an engineering tour de force, a defiant middle finger in the face of changing times, oil embargoes and the crunch of rising insurance rates and federal emission and safety regulations. It featured a special high-strength block with reinforced lifter galleys, 4-bolt mains and a special cast crankshaft with rolled fillets for additional durability. Forged pistons and rods made for a nearly bulletproof bottom end.
