Ampicillin is an Inhibitor of bacterial cell wall synthesis and inhibits crosslinking of peptidoglycan by binding and inactivating of transpeptidases. Its spectrum is against gram-negative bacteria.
Ampicillin is sensitive to inactivation by ß-lactamase and can be used as a resistance marker.
Ampicillin sodium dissolves well in water.
The antibiotic is inactivated by autoclaving and a solution should be sterilized by means of filtration.
