Tiger Tail Cucumber: The Sand-Sifting Marine Housekeeper

The Tiger Tail Cucumber (Stichopus sp.) is one of the most popular and visually interesting members of a marine clean-up crew. While the genus Stichopus sp. is often used, this name commonly refers to species like Holothuria hilla or Holothuria impatiens in the aquarium trade. This invertebrate is valued for its continuous sand-sifting behavior, playing a vital role in maintaining a clean, healthy, and aerated substrate.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Tiger Tail Cucumber has an elongated, cylindrical body that is typically mottled brown and tan with subtle stripes and small, spiny papillae, giving it its namesake appearance. It can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in a home aquarium. Due to its size and reliance on a natural food supply within the substrate, a minimum tank size of 50 gallons is recommended, and a deep, mature sand bed is essential for its long-term survival.

Warning: Like all sea cucumbers, this species can be dangerous if stressed, injured, or dying, as it may release holothurin (a potent toxin) into the water. This toxin can rapidly kill fish and other invertebrates. Therefore, while peaceful, it is considered an Expert Only inhabitant requiring careful acclimation and tank maintenance.

Diet & Compatibility:

• Diet: This animal is a dedicated Detritivore/Omnivore. It feeds by continually sweeping its tentacles across the substrate, ingesting sand, and extracting the organic matter, bacteria, microalgae, and detritus found within it. It excretes the cleaned sand.
• Feeding: In an established tank with a deep, live sand bed, its natural diet is usually sufficient. In newer or very clean systems, its diet must be supplemented with finely ground marine foods, sinking pellets, or targeted feeding of powdered algae/detritus blends.
• Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe. The Tiger Tail Cucumber is peaceful and will not harm corals, motile invertebrates (like snails), or other sessile life. Its sand-sifting activity is entirely beneficial to the reef environment.
• Temperament: Peaceful. It is completely non-aggressive. It must only be housed with peaceful tankmates. Avoid fish known to pick at invertebrates (e.g., Puffers, large Wrasses, Triggerfish) as harassment can cause stress, leading to toxin release.
• Safety Caution: The greatest risk is accidental injury. Ensure all pump intakes, powerheads, and overflow boxes are covered to prevent the cucumber from being sucked in. Drip acclimation for a minimum of 30-60 minutes is crucial to allow the animal to slowly adjust to the new water parameters and minimize stress.
