James Humbert Craig was an Irish artist of great esteem. Born in Belfast, he briefly attended Belfast School of Art but dropped out, becoming a mostly self-taught painter of landscapes. Craig’s style is impressionistic, visions of the Irish countryside so arresting that he represented his country in painting at the 1932 Summer Olympics.

This original oil painting speaks to Craig’s talent. He chose to never paint for money, only when he was inspired. After travelling all over however, he realised it was Ireland that roused him most. “If painters only knew the charm of the Glens they would come from all parts of the world to depict them on canvas,” he wrote.

A key figure of Irish art history, Craig is represented at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Armagh County Museum and the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. For collectors of impressionism, this is a stirring find.
