A stunning Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette hallmarked Birmingham 1864 and with the makers mark G.W.Co for G Wheeler & Co of Holborn, London.

A vinaigrette is a small hinged box or container often made of sterling silver and popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. They contained a sponge which was soaked in perfume or oils to mask the bad smells of the time. The sponge could also be soaked in vinegar to act as smelling salts for delicate individuals! The name of these containers comes from the French word for vinegar. The interior of these vinaigrettes were often highly decorated and washed in gilt to help prevent corrosion. They were small enough to keep in ones pocket or hung from a ladies chatelaine.

This vinaigrette is in beautiful condition with a gorgeous gilt washed grille and with the sponge still intact. A rare and very special piece of antique silver.

The vinaigrette has a silver jump ring so that it can be hung from a chain to create a unique pendant.

The vinaigrette measures 2.5cm x 1.5cm.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This vinaigrette is in excellent antique condition with clear hallmarks and it opens and shuts firmly.
