The California missions were established by Spanish Friars in the middle and towards the end of the eighteenth century. Capistrano itself was dedicated November 1, 1776. It is near the sea, at the village of San Juan Capistrano, between Los Angeles and San Diego. There were twenty-one missions, all told, along the California coast. They were connected by a road called "El Camino Real," or The King's Highway. California then belonged to Spain. It was the most romantic period of its existence. Most of the missions are in ruins; but they are the most picturesque ruins on this continent. Capistrano mission was destroyed by an earthquake December 8, 1812. Forty persons were killed. The description of life at the missions, as told in the poem, are from authentic sources.

About the Author
S. H. M. BYERS, soldier, diplomat and poet, first became publicly known for his many adventures and escapes in the Civil War. He closed his military career as an aid de camp on General Sherman's staff, and was offered a commission in the regular army, which he declined. While a prisoner at Columbia, S. C., he wrote the song of “Sherman's March to the Sea," the poem that gave its name to the picturesque campaign. Over a million copies of this song were sold. General Grant appointed him a consul and he remained in the service in various cities for nearly twenty years. During all this time his pen found ready employment in poems, reminiscences of the war and stories. Among his books are “Twenty years in Europe,” “The Happy Isles,” “The Honey moon,” “With Fire and Sword,” “Layman's Life of Jesus” and “The Bells of Capistrano and other Romances of the Spanish Days in California”.
